Ministries

Adult Ministry

As a people called by God to form the congregation of Tazewell Presbyterian Church, we are striving to provide opportunities for our adult members of all ages that will enable each one to grow in the knowledge of what God requires of us as followers and servants of Christ in the community of faith.  Our progressive Christian Education Team strives to adjust our programs to the current needs of our congregation.

The Tazewell Presbyterian Women are committed to Bible Study, nurturing our faith and the faith of all people in our church, missions and the overall caring of those in our church family.

Community Outreach is a monthly luncheon with a program, designed to reach area Senior Citizens including church members. It provides food for the body and soul, along with love and tenderness in a manner that preserves the worth and dignity of each participant. Also, lunches are delivered to church members who are homebound.

There are seven committees that meet regularly to maintain the policies of the church and decide on specific areas of the church ministry.  Each one is chaired by a current member of the session and the rest of the committee is comprised of current and past session members with any interested church members welcome to join.

Children & Youth Ministry

We embrace children in our church community and have several Christian and enriching programs for them!

The purpose of our Children / Youth Ministry is to educate our children in God’s word and to live the word as an example for them to follow.

Sunday morning worship at TPC (All children are welcome!)

During the 11:00 AM worship service at Tazewell Presbyterian Church, children come down front and join the pastor for a special children’s message before the regular sermon.  At the end of the children’s message, a church volunteer takes the children downstairs for a Children’s Church lesson that usually builds on the message that the pastor shared.  This includes a Bible story and craft time!

Wednesdays after school from 3:30 – 5:00 PM

On Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 PM, children and youth meet in the Tazewell Presbyterian Church fellowship hall where they share a snack and then break into two groups.  Adventure Time is for students from Kindergarten through grade five (K-5).

The second group, called TAG (The Adventure Gang), is for middle school students grades 6-8.  Each group has a Bible Story, a craft, and music time with our choir director.  The Adventure Time Choir and the Middle School Choir sing during worship one Sunday a month.

Summer

Typically held near the end of June, VBS is Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Classes are grouped for Preschool – 5th grade while the Middle and High School youth assist as helpers.

Music Ministry

Music at TPC exists to enhance our worship of God and our relationship with His Son Jesus Christ. Music is an integral part of the ministry of this church. We are centered in the belief that music in worship is an offering to God rather than a performance or entertainment.

Music at TPC is traditional at its center, but open to quality worship music from a variety of sources. It is characterized by:

  • An appreciation for hymnody throughout Christian history
  • Piano and pipe organ accompaniment
  • Live (non-recorded) music in most circumstances

  • Chancel Choir – Rehearses weekly, takes part in the Sunday morning worship service throughout the year. Comprised largely of adults but welcomes middle and high school youth.
  • Children’s Choir and Handbell Choir are occasional activities.

Special music programs at TPC are typically well attended not only by our own congregation, but also by members of the community. They represent a ministry that transcends denominational lines within the Tazewell area.

  • Christmas Cantata – A Sunday evening program in December, presented by the Chancel Choir and often joined by singers from other community churches. The service includes Christmas songs and anthems from a number of styles and composers and makes use of various instruments in accompaniment.
  • Tenebrae – A traditional Good Friday service presented by the Chancel Choir and incorporating music appropriate to the commemoration of Christ’s journey to the cross.
